What Seem Like Hell To You (Is Heaven To Me)

(Buddy Lewis)
2007-08-17
James Bohn
She’s been livin’ here forty five days and the trailer is small
She eats rice and some beans when she can or she don’t eat at all
But mother and daughter are happy since daddy’s been gone
She’s content just to sit at the table in the place she calls home

On a good night it’s frozen cheese pizza and Kool-Aid for two
And the sounds of the radio play when the dishes are through
Though the blankets are hand-me-downs from the St. Vincent DePaul
She’ll tell you she’s richer right now than when she had it all

Now mother and my daughter got tired of the slaughter
They got fed up with losing the war
They left Roanoke, Virginia on a Greyhound last winter
And they ain’t goin back anymore
There ain’t excuse for that kind of abuse - you see
What seems like hell to you - is heaven to me

Oh the neighbors all look down their noses and call her a tramp
They stare at her hand-me-down fashion and they laugh when she pays with food stamps
But their jokes and their laughter ain’t nothing to someone like me
What seems like hell to you - is heaven to me

Now mother and daughter got tired of the slaughter
Got fed up with losing the war
They left Roanoke, Virginia on a Greyhound last winter
And they ain’t goin back anymore
There ain’t no excuse for that kind of abuse - you see
What seems like hell to you - is heaven to me

Now the danger is passed and there’s freedom at last
And there’s no more policemen to call
And the telephone stays on the hook where it should - it ain’t torn out the wall
The cupboards ain’t full but the contents are pure luxury
What seems like hell to you - what seems like hell to you
It must seem like hell to you - but it’s heaven to me
